Pass a Grade - Pass a Test!

Studies show that many students in the United States graduate high school each year without the basic skills they need to write an email or read a newspaper. Should we require students to pass a test each year before they move on to the next grade, or should we continue to allow students to move through school without learning basic skills?

Look, hundreds of people have terrible test anxiety, others have an anxiety disorder,as Albert Einstein said: "Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability climb a tree, it will live its whole life thinking it's stupid." This fundamental point is why I stand firmly against standard testing.

    1. Great quote! However, aren't there some skills that everyone should possess, skills that are necessary to do well in life?

    2. We live in the 21st century. Too bad for the kids with test anxiety, they need to have basic computer skills.

    3. A written test will not teach students these skills. They need to be applied within the classroom.

  2. In my opinion, I believe that students should not have to take a test to move on to the next grade because it is the students choice not to learn and students who decide to learn and concentrate on their on their grades and school life should not have to suffer because of them.

  3. While that is true, basic literacy is essential to make it in today's society. Things that are that basic ought to be learned and then re-learned if the student cannot successfully do basic things or else we are setting them up for failure. We make people think that they are smart when really they are not and thus need to work hard in order to gain the basic and necessary knowledge to survive in the world of today.

  4. A basic test should be given to students moving onto the next grade. Nothing like CSAPs or TCAPs or the ACT but something to see if the students are being taught the correct information to get through life. This would be just like taking finals, you take a test at the end of the year to see what you have learned throughout the past few months of being in a specific grade level. Would there be grades given for the test based on how well a student did?

  5. if a student knows enough of the material to pass the class, they should pass the class, if they are passing all of their classes, they should pass the grade regardless of a test score.

  6. I feel we shouldn't require students to pass a test each year before they move on to the next grade. This is because students will not learn by taking a written test on how to read a newspaper. However, I don't think it's acceptable for students to graduate without these basic skills. We should apply basic skills in school studies. In affect, this would better teach students the basic skills they will need to succeed after graduation.
